ContentWith international business travel severely restricted during the Covid-19 pandemic, we find that trade volume on routes with more face-to-face meetings prior to Covid-19 are less affected in 2020. The effect is stronger for routes with larger shares of goods of high contractual frictions or higher rates of turnovers of senior managers or politicians, suggesting that face-to-face interactions make trade relationships more resilient through fostering stronger social connections. The analysis is based on trade data between provinces in China and foreign countries. For causal identification, we use cross-province variations in business travel intensities and export compositions by foreign countries, as well as an instrumental variable based on non-local shocks to the network of business travel. Our findings highlight the need to facilitate more face-to-face interactions between trading partners in the post-COVID era.
